My favorite part of YouTube is probably mashup culture. Fun fact: the first time I ever heard Wonderwall was in the context of a remix. Yes, that Wonderwall.
Since it’s gaming month, I figured I’d bring you my 5 favorite video game mashups!
[Undertale] Megalovania x Harder Better Faster Stronger
Megalovania from Undertale is one of the least heard songs in the game, but is definitely one of the strongest. It goes so well with so many things, but I think this is the strongest mashup
[Metal Gear Solid 5] Nuclear x Gentleman
There was a two month period where I’d listen to this song at least three times a day. Nuclear is one of the only songs from the MGS5 soundtrack with lyrics. Compared to something like Snake Eater, Nuclear works on its own as a standalone song, disassociated from the game, which makes it a great candidate for a pop song remix. Triple Q is known for Psy remixes, and this one is no exception.
[Undertale] Hopes and Dreams x See You Again
The three Undertale songs used in this mashup are all from a really emotionally intense part of the game. Pairing the theme of family from this section with See You Again really works and elevates See You Again to a higher energy level, something it really benefits from.
[Ace Attorney Investigations] Great Revival x Happy
I showed this song to one of my friends from the Ace Attorney fandom and their response was “Wow, it took Edgeworth to make a song that overplayed interesting and fun.” The version of Great Revival is actually a Jazz remix in itself, which plays really well with a song like Happy because it lends instruments and interesting background variation to a song with strong vocal interest.
[Nintendo Wii Shop Channel] Wii Shop Channel x Hotline Bling
Okay, so this technically isn’t from a game, but come on man. The simple, earworm tune from the Wii Shop pairs really well with Drake’s vocals in that it makes the song simultaneously less interesting, but more mesmerizing and fun. Hotline Bling has a lot of angsty emotions associated with it, but it’s hard to connect with those when you’re unconsciously moving your shoulders to the Wii’s equivalent of elevator music.
