First of all, let me state for the record the original Evil Dead Trilogy is mint (or whatever kids are saying these days) and Bruce Campbell is the king. But I honestly don’t think he could pull off an Evil Dead 4 and it’s about time I get my fix of a new Evil Dead movie. So? REMAKEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Rumors about a new Evil Dead have been circling since, well the dawn of time, before Sam Raimi was born, but in the past few months there has been actual reason to believe the people saying these rumors weren’t just dirty liars.
When Raimi was working on Drag Me To Hell and promoting it he brought up a possible new script for an Evil Dead that he had been working on with his brother. Backing this up even more, Raimi’s producer, Robert Tapert went on record saying, [An Evil Dead reboot is] possible; we’re looking at a script this month… What’s interesting about ‘Evil Dead’ is very few people saw it in the format we made it for, which is for the theater. … I think Sam wants to embrace the ultimate experience in grueling terror and see it remade for a proper theatrical experience.
And as of this week, talks of directors and locations have been discussed. *Ahem* Probably directing the Evil Dead remake will be Fede Alvarez? Does the name ring a bell? He did a short about giant robots kicking human ass a little over a year ago. Let me refresh your memory.
Please enter the url to a YouTube video.Rumor is casting is taking place in Detroit, Michigan and there is no word on who is starring yet. I personally don’t know what to think. While I love the originals and would love a remake that is more horror based, I’m not so sure if this director can pull it off.
So is this great news? Terrible news? Am I horribly wrong about Bruce Campbell not being able to pull off another Evil Dead? Let me know in the comments below.
The thing about the original Evil Dead trilogy was that it withstood the test of time; it aged well, providing audiences (the nerdier ones, at least) with shrieks of horror to the first one and laughs every minute to the third installment even 20 years after their release. They were and still are an endearing set of films, and a fourth installment at this point just seems like taking a defibrillator to an already-conscious person. I’m not worried about Bruce Campbell not being able to pull off Ashley Williams, oh no; that would be akin to a master chef suddenly forgetting how to create his signature dish. I’m worried that any director other than Sam Raimi will take over and do just that: take over.
There is a formula that works for certain series that only the original director knows and does not when another director steps in and provides no leeway to options other than what (s)he wants. It didn’t work when Brett Ratner took over for Bryan Singer for the third X-Men movie. It didn’t work when Len Wiseman directed the fourth Die Hard installment instead of John McTiernan. It certainly didn’t work when Steven Spielberg gave up the Jaws films. I’m not too aware of Fede Alvarez’s works – maybe he’ll do a good job, maybe he won’t – but this is not the film for us to find out which one it’ll be. No, the chemistry between Raimi and Campbell should remain unadulterated when it comes to reprising such an iconic role.
To be fair, Raimi is covering the script and producing so he will be closely involved. And I expect Campbell to make a large cameo.
i dunno, i’m excited but only if it’s more horror oriented like you said
