While watching Green Room I had one of those cathartic movie experiencing moments where I literally had to stop and think to myself, “This is why I watch films.” Before going any further into this review I will just go ahead and say off the bat, this movie deserves your attention, it is a drop everything and see it now type affair. It won’t be for the faint of heart but for any fear seeking, thrill riding types, this movie is just for you.
Green Room opens up with some well shot scenes which sets the standard for the rest of the film’s run time. There are multiple scenes that are beautiful even despite the depravity that is ensuing in said scene. What starts off as a young punk rock road group, ends up in a terrifying tale that circles the themes of “what are you willing to become to survive.” The idea of duality permeates through this entire movie as you see many complex scenes of characters shifting in and out of being the hero and becoming the monster. It is such a well crafted story and walks that line perfectly, while never committing to giving an answer on what is morally right. The characters are deep, without having to say much, the scene of hopelessness infects the movie in all the right ways, and the constant sense of dread never lets up.
The recently deceased Anton Yelchin takes up leading male roles and really delivers a performance that will have us all missing this bright young star’s career and what it could have been. His character has such a major transformation in Green Room that I am afraid to dive into anymore in fear of strolling into spoiler territories. He has an amazing supporting cast that includes the likes of, Alia Shawkat (Maeby Funke from Arrested Development), and Imogen Poots (a name that is infinitely fun to say) whom both give great performances; especially Poots whom I cannot wait to see more of.
It would be hard to go any further without pointing out the complete paradigm shift Patrick Stewart’s career will take after this role. Never have I seen a more sadistic performance. It borders on the line between Walter White (Breaking Bad) and the character Ed Norton plays in American History X. He is absolutely terrifying in this movie and I had multiple thoughts that stemmed along the lines of, “Not my Patrick Stewart!” He plays a neo-Nazi skinhead who owns the bar that our main characters are playing at. To go any further into detail would ruin the mystery behind the entire run time of Green Room, which had me second guessing myself at every turn.
I do not easily scare. I am not one who gets much out of the horror/thriller genre these days. This movie is certainly more of a thriller, and while it has elements of torture porn and gore fest, it would be disingenuous to call it either. Yes there is plenty of gore, gore so graphic it even had me turning my head at multiple points. Yes this movie has elements of people trying to survive their sadistic captures, which sounds very by the number, but again this movie is so much more than that. It is easy to lump this flick in with those types of movies when only seeing a trailer or hearing people talk about surface level elements. You will just have to trust me when I say the movie is unlike anything you have ever seen. Never has a movie evoked so much emotion out of me. It has been such a long time that a film got under my skin this much, and it is a sensation I deeply miss. If you are a fan of these twisted thrillers, this is a must see for you. However, if you are easily spooked, do not enjoy stressful scenes, or are easily squeamish, I would heavily consider passing on this movie. It is a rough and emotional experience, but I mean that in the most positive of ways. Movies this special only come a few times in a lifetime, and I challenge all of you to seek it out and experience it for yourselves.
X-Men: Days of Future Past was amazing; I want to start with that. But before we go any further, let’s put all our cards on the table here, folks: HERE BE SPOILERS. That being said, everything that is remotely spoiler-y will be under the cut, so read this part just fine. We are now two weekends removed from the premiere of X-Men: Days of Future Past, and I’ve seen it twice. That has given me what I hope is a little better insight on the new entry to the X-Men franchise, and possibly a way to share that with you, the reading audience.
So, now that all of that fun stuff is out of the way, let’s get to the really good part: the movie. I’m going to level with all of you (okay, the one of you that might read this). I wanted to try and come down off the movie, but it’s like a drug. My levels of obsession with it are bordering on the unhealthy, which I suppose is problematic, but nothing I can’t handle, yet…can’t handle so far… Look, I’m not going to lie. It’s a downward spiral, alright?
X-Men: Days of Future Past (from now on referred to as DoFP) was a great superhero movie. One that, for me, has entered into my own personal top five, joining the ranks of The Dark Knight, Avengers, Captain America 2, and Hellboy. It made it up there with a combination of the maturation of the directing style of Bryan Singer, the surprisingly deft script work of Simon Kinberg, and the superb acting of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Ian Mckellen, and Patrick Stewart. I want to particularly single out McAvoy and Fassbender, for reasons that will be apparent once you are able to watch the film. DoFP, while ostensibly about Wolverine travelling in a very willy-nilly, timey-wimey fashion (again, these movies might as well be called “Wolverine and the X-Men”), is more about the relationship between Xavier, Magneto, and Mystique. McAvoy and Fassbender lend a sense of seriousness, and weight to each scene they occupy, especially when they are in it together.
There are so many solid characterizations in this movie that I don’t want to forget to mention the character of Peter Maximoff, I’m not sure anyone, but Evan Peters, could have pulled it off. Possibly one of the worst character reveals in the history of film promotion, Peter, or Pietro, was played with a sense of sly conviction and sarcasm. It was a breath of fresh air for a character I am excited to see more of him, if the X-Men: Apocalypse casting rumors are true. Since there is a spoiler warning at the beginning, did you guys see the slow mo scene in the Pentagon? Because holy **** guys, that was some of the best use of slow mo in recent memory.
I bet at this point you are asking yourself, why after all this praise, doesn’t the film reach higher levels in my top five? That is a valid question, dear reader, because here is where my issues with the film arise. You might have noticed that I mentioned a third name there when I was talking about Magneto and Professor X, Mystique. Jennifer Lawrence is spectacular as Raven/Mystique, but she along with Peter Dinklage as Bolivar Trask, and Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde, were all underused so much it was criminal. For a film where Mystique was set up as the linchpin in history, the proverbial turning point, she was given surprisingly little to actually do in a movie that seemed to focus more on the redemption of Xavier, which may or may not have been a good thing. I’m still not quite sure.
Another major issue I had with DoFP is half nerd quibble, and half the removal of importance on a certain character. The original DoFP storyline is anchored by Kitty Pryde, one of my favorite comic book characters, and arguably strong enough to carry a movie all on her own. Especially when portrayed by Ellen Page. So why was it necessary to change it to Wolverine then?
In an interview with Empire magazine, Singer addressed the exact question I am asking.
“It was logic for the story, ” the director said. “It felt logical that he’s a character that we’re very grounded with, that we like to see in these movies. And his younger self would have the same appearance as his older self, so the same actor can play the role. Most importantly, the idea is that when we go back in time and discover Magneto and Xavier as young men, they’re at great odds and very wrecked and unmanageable, and I liked the idea of an older character having to manage these two reckless young men. If it had been a character jumping into their younger self, then it would have been a young character doing that and with Kitty Pryde it would have been a very young character. Well, in our world she wouldn’t have been born at all. And lastly Wolverine, from a technical standpoint, is the only one who can traverse that distance. The notion is that she can send people back in time for a week or two which they use in the future as a defense mechanism, but to physically send someone back that far is too damaging for the mind and the body. But Wolverine’s body heals, so as long as he remains focused and calm, he can remain until she can no longer control it.”
Ok, so that’s an answer I suppose. But here is my problem, in context of the films that have come out, that makes sense. The last time we saw Kitty, she was in Brett Ratner’s horrifying addition to X-3. The whole point of this new movie is to remove films like tha,t and X-Men Origins: Wolverine from the Fox/Marvel films story canon, which is great, I guess. But the mishandling of solid female characters like Kitty led us to this place where one of the coolest characters in the X-Men wheelhouse is relegated to a supporting role for Wolverine. It’s disappointing, and now that the universe is rewritten at the end of the film, I worry that we won’t ever get to see Ellen Page really get a chance to make Kitty shine. Is that all I have to say? Not by a long shot, but I think I’m going to need to watch the movie a few more times before I can genuinely talk about some of the issues I had. But for a franchise that’s been floundering recently, X-Men: Days of Future Past is much more than passable. Entering the realm of some of the best Comic Book Films ever made, Bryan Singer and company gave us a X-Men film that wipes away most of the bad past, and gives us the chance for a shiny new future.

This star studded event demolished Ben Steven’s previously anticipated “hopeful” goal of 15,000 with around 20,000 – 25,000 comic fans lining the walls and prompting the convention itself to apologize for nearly doubling the capacity of the Irving Convention Center! Though we here at IHOGeek, especially our Dallas natives ladyvader99 and killerrqueen, are no stranger to the chaotic nature of cons in general, pulling up to the convention center an hour after their scheduled opening time of 11am was extremely surprising. Luckily, being shoulder to shoulder with our cosplaying bretheren was distracting enough that time flew by and, before we knew it, our autographs were collected and we squished our way to various stands.
There was the usual convention fare: dealers specializing in rare figures, gorgeous prints to be signed by Captain Picard or art legend Perez, comics by the long box, artists pimping their particular brand of crack (i.e. prints we must buy), and on the fourth floor, a company called Big Freeze had set up a platform that took fucking amazing 3D action photos of cosplayers and con-goers. Not to be put out by the damper that was Friday, one shining moment of DCC Round Two was meeting Stan Lee on Saturday, something every geek dreams about! In a wonderful moment of connections forged and favors being asked, we were able to spend ten glorious minutes in the presence of Stan Lee. Energetic and with a flair leaning toward theatrical, Stan charmed the figurative pants off of us. With one leg swung over the arm of the chair, he regaled us with the tale of how he ended up co-running Comikaze Expo (yep, the same one we interviewed Regina Carpinelli about!). As our mini-interview came to a close, we turned our attentions to capturing photos of our fellow geeks in colorful costumes, but due to the utter mass of people crowding each and every hallway, finding an empty spot was nearly impossible. We decided to reconvene the next day in hopes of getting better coverage.
On Sunday, the lines were thankfully lessened and we felt less sardine-like as @ladyvader99 made her way to the Kevin Conroy (or as some may know, Bruce Wayne from Batman: The Animated Series) side of the convention in the hopes of acquiring an autograph and hearing a raspy rendition of “I am the night!” Unfortunately, this quest sadly failed as Conroy’s line was capped 20 people ahead of her after two hours of waiting. The absence of thousands allowed us to easily explore the rest of the convention and take many as many photos of wandering cosplayers as we could capture. Our discovery of the fourth floor photo exhibit, The Big Freeze, left us captivated. The Big Freeze exhibit consisted of a raised platform with well over a hundred mounted cameras that when triggered create a bullet time special effect, sometimes called the Matrix camera or 360 camera. The effect left us stopped in our tracks for a good half hour as many, many extraordinary photos were taken (our favorite being a fight scene between Deadpool and Dark Phoenix) Luckily, this is when we were also privy to an adorable chase scene between a tiny Robin cosplayer and an adult Joker cosplayer, another highlight of the day.
As the afternoon began to wane, we decided to try our luck with Firefly and Serenity actress, Summer Glau. While we were denied the time for an interview due to the multitude of people and Glau’s quickly approaching flight to catch, we were allowed to shadow the last half of her private autograph session. Summer Glau is as absolutely stunning in person as she is on film, a petite beauty with locks that fell in perfect waves. Someone make a tutorial on Summer Glau’s hair, STAT! As her session ended, we expected to be ushered out with the other media but surprisingly were allowed to linger and witnessed Laura Vandervoot coming in to meet and fangirl over Summer almost as much as we were doing ourselves! All too soon though, we decided to head out and ran into several of the gamer models for Charisma+2, including owner and founder, Yvonna Lynn (who was representing the warrior princesses dressed as Xena!) before heading out for the day.
Unfortunately, the moment that the convention was over, fans took to the Interweb/Facebook/Youtube to vent their personal frustrations on waiting 3+ hours for autographs and swag in a packed Dealer’s Room. Listening to fellow fans around us definitely shed some light on their experiences and expectations, though Con-goes need to expect the unexpected at times and remember that not every issue can be blamed on someone else. Stan Lee and Patrick Stewart, both previously scheduled for the entire weekend, ended up having to cut their visits short as their schedules changed which prompted a lot of attendees to shift the days they planned to attend to make sure they saw who they paid for. The conclusion of the convention saw numerous fans lodging complaints with the convention organizers, most notably a one hour long diatribe from YouTube user escottish140 personally directed to Ben Stevens, to the point where NBC sought out Dallas personality, cosplayer and long time Convention fiend, Taffeta Darling, to get her thoughts on the whole thing based on her initial response video to escottish140. Despite the small slice of negativity, most fans realize that the mishaps, mistakes and mayhem of conventions is part of the excitement that leads us geeks to go there in the first place!
