At first glance the movie looks great. Tekken was supervised by Youchi Mori, who is known for Appleseed, and the screenplay was written by Dai Sato, who has worked on projects like Cowboy Bebop; Sato is also a fan of the Tekken series. Based on these two people alone, I would say so far there is a good foundation for the movie to be a success. If you also take into account the voice actors such as Kyle Hebert, who plays Kazuya Mishima, he is also best known for the character Ryu from Street Fighter. Kyle has also worked on several anime titles like Gurren Lagann and Dragon Ball Z Kai. Cristina Valenzuela also lends her voice talents as Alisa Bosconovitch, and while Cristina is not new to the voice acting world, she played the role of Noel Vermillion from BlazBlue. She has also played her part in the anime world by working on such titles as Blade of the Immortal and K-On! . With this line up I would say I expected the movie to be amazing. The voice acting for the most part was on point but it did have its cheesy one liners and some almost painful moments.
Unfortunately, I was not too impressed with it. The story was odd and to say the least, it felt more anime like than a movie and it didn’t relate to the main story of the franchise. Hehachi was a principal and Ganryu was a gym teacher and some of the characters felt out of their element, including Shin, who was immortal but then somehow died followed by an awkward yelling of “NOOO”. There was also this weird spirit thing that was made up of Mokujin (a playable character in the series). There was even a scene where “someone” died but was “revived” by tears. If you were to remove the entire Tekken cast and replace them with new characters the plot would still work. The inclusion of the Tekken characters did not make much of a difference.
Don’t get me wrong, I am a fan of the Tekken series and I went in with high hopes. The fight scenes were fantastic and incorporated some of the actual moves that are in the game. They did not skimp on the graphics and the level of detail was amazing. I watched it in “Real 3D” and it looked like this is the way 3D movies should be done. If you’re going to see it, I would definitely recommend you see it in 3D because it is highly worth it. Be prepared to have some laughs with it, after all the movie does have its comic relief characters like Lee. My favorite character in the movie would be Panda because he (she/it?) was cute and funny with his almost human characteristics and ways of communicating. It is worth seeing at least once and I will more than likely add it to my collection when it is released on DVD and Blu-ray. If you feel like waiting for it, by all means do so, the release is scheduled for later this year around November. If you’ve seen it, let me know your opinion down below.
Fighting game movie…really…really…? …I read the title and immediately felt Tekken and movie should not be in the same sentence.
Heiachi is a gym teacher? Wtf…
It’s odd how we were talking about Pikachu reviving Ash with tears earlier and how it’s odd that revives him, and then Tekken does it on the same day. Small world.
I’m going to pass on this one. Thank you for sparing me a few dollars.
i say at least watch it for the fight scenes
and yea i was thinking the same thing with pikachu
See the inherent problem with video game movies is…why do I want to watch what I can and have been playing for (in some cases) decades? It’s a hard sell and I think in the end that’s why almost, if not every single one, has sucked. Movies are more escapism, whereas video games are of course a more immersing experience. Having the ability to take on a set of responsibilities, but not having to accept the real world consequences. So after being used to essentially being the characters in the games where you follow a loosely set pattern through an optional plot of self-guided choices…going to having no control whatsoever of these character, just watching a linear progression, feels almost pointless. My father said it best: When I was ranting and raving about how badly I wanted a Legends of Zelda film as a youngster, he said something that resonated with me to this very day: “Why? We already have that, except better. You’re a part of it.” I couldn’t beat that argument even if I wanted to try.
in my humble opinion, fighting movies are crappy. doubt this? watch mortal kombat :DD granted, mortal kombat has become a cult classic and hell, even i will still get excited hearing the theme song! i think the only really, honest to goodness GOOD video game movie is advent children and even then, it’s because it expanded on the story, not place them in weird real world situations :)
either way, i’m glad you found something to enjoy <3
The ova’s for street fighter are awesome along with the actual anime movies, they made up for the live action failures, i think its just the plot that makes a difference
Yeah Cg and anime movies based on video games can be good.
Hell, Advent Children was based on an rpg but the whole movie was basically a giant fight scene (and it was awesome to watch). It’s a shame actual fighting games don’t take that route and just release a movie with epic battles and avoiding clumsy plot.
Things don’t have to be this way. :( Thanks for the warning though. You saved me from a high expectation and the disappointment that comes with it.
I gotta bookmark this site it seems invaluable extremely helpful
I happen to be a enormous admirer of The 90s Are All That on TeenNick. To be honest though, I am just beginning to become uninterested in today’s selection of programs which they are at the moment running. Subsequently they are going to start off throwing in a different variety of TV programs in the 2 hour block of shows. Assuming they do not do this, subsequently however, Nickelodeon will quickly lose tv audiences.
