That’s right, you’ve read the title correctly. If you are one of us, and by “us” I mean internet user, be it for work or play, you need to read this as everything you do on the internet will be impacted. The Protect IP Act or Bill S.968 is currently on the cusp of being passed and we urge you to contact your State Representative and be heard.
So what IS the Protect Act? It’s the corollary to the SOPA or Stop Online Piracy Act from October but goes a step further. This act will basically hinder Internet innovation, will invite security risks as you use the Internet, and will threaten your online freedom of speech. Not convinced? How about having everything you do tracked and censored? If you’re like me, this is not okay. Something like this could and WILL impact every thing you do on the Internet, be it buying those awesome shoes on Ebay to social networking. Basically, the government would be able to force ISPs and search engines to redirect or dump your attempts to reach certain websites.
