Unlike the review previously posted by Koalaintheusa, this is going to be strictly spoilers. I’m not going to go over plot details or whether the soundtrack was good, I’m just going to list facts that happened in the movie. This is, again, NOT your typical review. There WILL be spoilers aplenty, so consider yourself thoroughly warned and let’s move forward.
- Loki is the primary villain and has the power of the tesseract/Cosmic Cube under his command as well as an army of Chitauri.
- Using a staff he was given by a hooded thing credited as The Other, Loki puts Selvig, Hawkeye, and a random under a sort of mind control for the first third/half of the film in which they are antagonists.
- I saw no sign of Spider-man, his parents, or Hank Pym.
- The S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier is badass.
- Agent Coulson dies.
- Hulk does indeed smash.
- In that same vein, Mark Ruffalo FINALLY shows some superb acting chops.
- Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal of Loki has left no room for doubt that he is pure evil and chaotic.
- There is minimal romance.
- Tony Stark shows off his Mach 7 armor which flies to him and encases him in his suit.
- The newly constructed, and subsequently destroyed Stark Tower is hinted at becoming the Avengers Tower.
- Tony learns the meaning of self sacrifice and narrowly escapes dying through the portal opened over Manhattan by Loki.
- During the credits the creature in the super fancy futuristic chair is revealed to be a grinning Thanos.
- The only bad thing about this movie: it ended.
THEORIES added 5/4/12:
- Coulson is still alive in the form of a Life Model Decoy (a joke Tony Stark made with Coulson in the beginning of the film)
- The Other is Annihilus.
- Annihilus and Thanos are in the Negative Zone.
- Project Pegasus, widely seen on computer screens during the opening S.H.I.E.L.D. bunker scenes, opens doorways for the Ant Man movie and especially his android creations.
- Thanos must go to Asgard in order to grab the Infinity Gauntlet (seen in the Weapons Vault in Thor) and to punish Loki.
- Annihilus and Thanos have only appeared together in the Annihilation story arc.
- The ending news montage shows many people wary of the saviors with hidden identities, calling their safety into question. Perhaps a precursor to Civil War.
Some of these are technically opinions, but you get the gist. If you’ve seen The Avengers already, what were your thoughts?

I freakin’ loved this movie! Whedon knows just how to combine humor (such humor at Loki’s expense there was) and seriousness (that eyeball scene -shudder) in a way that makes the entire ride a blast. The actors were all superb, but I’m especially partial to Hiddleston because I love when actors (especially ones that are as nice and lovable in real life as Tom) just lose their shit for a role.
As for no sign of Spider-Man, well that’s gonna be a tough issue. Spider-Man is owned by Sony (I believe) so Disney/Marvel really can’t include him in one of their own movies unless they buy the movie rights back. Same for X-Men since they’re still owned by Fox. Boooo.
it was just perfection. mark ruffalo and tom hiddleston were hands down the best things about the avengers in my opinion.
