Dinosaurs, Daleks and the Doctor: New Trailer For Doctor Who Season Seven is THAT Good

Whovians are losing their minds waiting for the newest season of Doctor Who to arrive. Details are trickling out at a snail’s pace and for about a year now (alright, it’s only been three months…), all we’ve had is a rather short teaser trailer and an episode title: Dinosaurs on a Spaceship.

Don’t get me wrong, Dinosaurs are cool (the coolest?) and finding them on a spaceship is awesome. But today, a new trailer has been released for the upcoming season and it is so glorious that it almost made me cry. Really, it’s that good.

BBC America has a short blog post about the trailer, but they’re still refusing to put a date on when all this insanity’s finally going to begin.

Just in case you’re not watching it obsessively on repeat, here’s some stuff you might have missed:

The really great thing about this trailer is that it’s genuinely all new material. There’s nothing that repeats from the older teaser, which gives us a good look at their Western episode but only flashes of the rest of the season. Both videos, however, give an indication that we’re heading into the most epic season of NewWho yet, and by the looks of things, the rules of the game have entirely changed.

What interests me perhaps even more than the dinosaurs is the last line of the trailer. Sure, the obvious conclusion to draw is that, yet again, the Doctor has committed what he thinks is Dalek genocide, until the next season when one measly Dalek has gotten through and we’re back on the same dalek-go-round we’ve been on for six years. BUT he’s also holding Amy, and it’s not unheard of for the companions to pull through in the eleventh hour and do something miraculous. AND we know this is the Pond’s last season AND this particular moment is important enough that it was a stand-alone publicity image released yesterday.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, and we’ve been promised “fourteen blockbuster episodes” for the occasion. So far, Eleven and the Ponds have tested the limits of NewWho, arguably making their time together one of the more mature story lines even while it continually returns to fairy tale tropes and a companion with major Peter Pan syndrome. So, season seven, let’s see what you’ve got.
