Magneto
Magneto’s powers include magnetic manipulation, creation of magnetic fields, magnetic flight, super intelligence, and is skilled at strategy.
A good story arc with Magneto is Magneto: Testament or if you’d like something current, try out House of M.
Best Magneto quote in my opinion: “I have offered them hope and truth, opportunity and accomplishment. I will continue to do so for all mutants I deem worthy and I will not let your X-Men stop me again.”
Mephisto
This class two Hell Lord has been the gent behind a number of evil plots throughout the Marvel universe including being the fiery spirit who cursed Johnny Blaze AND likes to routinely piss off and tease Silver Surfer. Ruler of a hell that is neither biblical nor rooted in lore, Mephisto has only ever loved once but even that short bit of joy wasn’t enough for him. He loves to impersonate Satan and takes a keen interest in souls who are in love or exceptionally pure. He is ridiculously jealous of the demon Zarathos and does everything in his power to get the best of him resulting in his capture and subsequent bonding to Johnny Blaze. While he was temporarily destroyed and then reformed, Mephisto had lost five pieces of his soul, two of which were mystically implanted in Scarlet Witch’s twin sons. Currently you can encounter Mephisto during the Fear Itself event, which just ended so check it out!
Mephisto has amplified physical attributes, is immortal and can wield various types of magic.
In one of my favorite Spider-Man arcs, Mephisto takes advantage of Spider-Man’s desperation to save his beloved Aunt May, so please check out Amazing Spider-Man: One More Day.
Best Mephisto quote in my opinion: “Have you thought for a second to ask yourselves why? Why I chose you two out of all people? It’s because yours is the rarest love of all. Pure, unconditional and made holy in the eyes of He who I hate most.”
Mysterio
The caped villain Mysterio has always been one of my favorites out of Spider-Man’s foes even when he spewed the cheesiest of lines in my dog-eared copy of Essential Spider-Man vol. 1. In his very first encounter with web slinger Peter Parker, this special effects guru frames Spider-Man in a robbery by messing with his spider sense but is quickly dealt with. He later joins Sinister Six and is almost successful in mind fucking Spider-Man into revealing his identity but is again foiled. While in jail following another failed plan, Mysterio’s cellmate carries on his work at his behest. Daniel Beck actually does a little better than the original Mysterio and succeeds in tricking Spider-Man into believing he’d killed an innocent bystander. Not to be upstaged, Mysterio is released and ready to wreak havoc, but had been diagnosed with a tumor and cancer. He decided to pull out all the stops and kill Spider-Man but deduced that the Spider-Man shown on television and newspapers was only a clone and switched his sights to Daredevil (in actuality the clone had been taken care of and it was legitimately Spider-Man himself). Daredevil broke Mysterio down, and with nothing to live for, Mysterio took his own life. In current stories, Mysterio has revealed that his death was faked and had helped Norman Osborn fake the death of his son Harry as well.
Mysterio’s “powers” include being a skilled illusionist, master hypnotist, roboticist, and has extensive knowledge of special effects.
A really good arc involving Mysterio oddly doesn’t involve Spider-Man but instead deals with Daredevil! Try Daredevil vol.2 #1-10!
Best Mysterio quote in my opinion: ” ‘Give up now?’ Smug, arrogant fool. This game is barely begun.”
Mephisto sounds like a badass and I love Mysterio
