I’m working really hard right now on bringing you some great videos, so I haven’t been on my article grind recently. So this spurred me to thinking that when I’m in a crunch week I am going to flood you with all the small news in the world of console gaming and the occasional science article.
LET IT BEGIN!! KOALA’S DAILY DOSE!!! *TRIUMPHANT ROAR*
So lets start it off!
So the Nintendo 3DS just came out 6 months ago and they are dropping the price from 350$ to 270$. What happened Nintendo? If you already have a 3DS you will be getting 10 free NES downloads and 10 free DSi downloads. Fair? Maybe/Maybe not, your call.
Apparantly this price drop will put the 3DS at the same cost as a regular DS, so you really should buy a 3DS if you were thinking of going for its little brother. Nintendo will be losing money on every sale, but methinks they are planning on making it back through downloadable titles so here’s to you Nintendo. Once a vast giant of money-making badasses and now on your hands and knees begging us to buy your software!! Well HA, I wont fall for your ploy…. because I already bought a 3Ds.
Anyways, apparantly it’s a “different market” than Nintendo had expected so they are taking drastic measures to get 3DS’s in our hands this holiday season. I think it isn’t selling as well because of all the great games on my iPhone. Like… uh… Well Infinity Blade is cool? Or maybe it’s because everybody already owns a DS and a Wii. You need some solid 3DS games if you want to attract new buyers. Duh.
Anyways, here’s the list of the free games you can download if you already bought a 3DS. They haven’t released a full list so here it what they have so far.
– Super Mario Bros.
– Donkey Kong Jr.
– Balloon Fight
– Ice Climber
– The Legend of Zelda
– Super Mario Advance 3
– Yoshi’s Island
– Mario Kart: Super Circuit
– Metroid Fusion
– WarioWare, Inc.
– Mega Microgames
– Mario vs. Donkey Kong.
On to Item #2
BORDERLANDS IS GETTING A SEQUEL!! BORDERLANDS IS GETTING A SEQUEL!! BORDERLANDS IS GETTING A… wait I already knew that…. Okay, so what we all knew was going to happen has ALMOST officially been confirmed. Am I grasping at straws here? Nah, rumor on good authority is that 2K Games will be announcing the sequel shortly.
Don’t know what Borderlands is? A game developed by Gearbox studios that is part co-op adventure, part RPG, a whole lot of shooting, and randomly generated guns that almost guarantee you’ll never get the same gun twice. Plus it is fun as hell.
Here’s a trailer from good ol’ IGN, if you missed the game when it first came out.

The tragedy that took place a week back, that quickly became known as the Oslo massacre has created debate once again over video games and violence. Early reports described the event of a “right wing Christian psychopath”, so naturally a few Christian groups have evaded blame and pointed fingers at video games, despite the fact that this was the act of a mad man and not related to his religion, politics, or his gaming console.
Unfortunately, the killer released a manifesto saying Call of Duty helped him train to kill people and that World of Warcraft is a great excuse to tell people while you are planning murder. This has lead to Coop Norge, a large Norwegian grocery store chain, and Platekompaneit, a large movie/game/music retailer, removing the games from their stores. Coop Norge has stated, “We don’t want them to stumble upon violent video games while buying milk and bread in our stores”, while Platekompaniet declined response.
What do you guys think about these crazy times and video games being blamed for murder? Is it the same thing as when slasher movies first came out and were blown out of proportion as Satanic and grotesque, or is there actually some sense to the claims that video games cause murder?
The Oslo massacre was too much like the Arizona shooting earlier this year: a whole lot of finger pointing way too early and resulted in everybody retracting their accusations once the motive was made public. I wrote an entire college paper on the correlation between video games and violence, and used Modern Warfare 2 as my example in it. Basically, MW2 has sold over 22 million copies worldwide, which should mean that if a violent, controversial game such as this could cause individuals to behave as violently as the game portrays, then 22 million folks should be out killing each other and razing the earth right about now (and that’s just individual copies; the total number of people who have played it is much higher, obviously).
Also, you failed to state that Gearbox is based in Plano. You get only 1 star!
IHOGeek is a multi-state group, so we don’t only represent Texas. We reach as far as New York and California, but yes Gear box is based in Plano and I have personally visited there. Amazing company with amazing people.
Your logic is actually a little bit flawed about 22 million people should be out killing. A lot of people smoke, but only a certain amount of them get cancer. I personally don’t feel violent video games create violence in peaceful people, but studies have shown that violent video games (or violent anything) can trigger certain individuals with issues, although the percentage of these people compared to normal people is somewhere around 1 in every 150, 000 (correct me if I’m wrong with that number).
“…the percentage of these people compared to normal people is somewhere around 1 in every 150,000…”
Hmm, even that sounds like a bit too many for all the copies of all the violent games sold over two-and-a-half decades. I mean, I don’t have any proof to back that up, but when titles are pushing tens or hundreds of millions of copies and we’re not seeing or hearing about individuals with issues I’m inclined to think it would be at least 1 in over 1,000,000 or so. But then again, I don’t know how you define “issues” in this sense; if you’re referring to a large scale report like Breivik or an individual who kills someone, or if the statistic also includes something small-time like a kid punching their sibling in the face.
Here’s a link that suggests you are correct

Here’s a study that suggests violent media does cause aggressive behavior
http://www.sscnet.ucla.edu/comm/malamuth/pdf/81Jrp15.pdf
I also wrote a paper on this very topic. Aggression does increase while playing violent games, but the same increase of aggression was found in almost all forms of player vs player. On top of that, violent movies and such. The difference between movies and video games however, is games stimulate more of the brain then watching a show does.
The tragedy that took place a week back, that quickly became known as the Oslo massacre has created debate once again over video games and violence??
Yep. Apparently stores in Norway are refusing to sell Modern Warfare and World of Warcraft because the killer played them and wrote that they were good for training to kill people and to use as an alibi when your making bombs.
These are truly enormous ideas in regarding blogging.
You have touched some nice factors here. Any way keep up wrinting.
