New Ultimate Spiderman Revealed!

The single question that has no doubt been plaguing Ultimate Marvel fans around the world has finally been answered! The identity of Marvel’s brand new Ultimate Spiderman has just been revealed! As unfortunate as it is for such a monumental thing to be spoiled by main stream media, it isn’t shocking – seeing as the Death of Spiderman finale was spoiled in much the same way. Also, to be quite frank, as long as the spoils are warned for those who don’t wish to know, I don’t mind! So don’t worry, here at International House of Geek, you will be warned right now that spoilers, big ones, are ahead! The new Ultimate Spiderman is in fact a brand new character, and his name is Miles Morales! Setting another milestone for diversity in comics, Marvel has introduced Miles: a Half-Hispanic, half Black teenager who takes up the mantel after Peter Parker’s death. Brian Michael Bendis said in the USA Today article, “The theme is the same: With great power comes great responsibility, he’s going to learn that. Then he has to figure out what that means.”

This wouldn’t be the first time in the Ultimate Universe that a historically white character is now being portrayed by someone of a different ethnicity. Unlike Nick Fury, however, Miles is an entirely new character. Regardless, the change is welcome. I, personally, am very excited to see Miles Morales behind the mask, especially because there are so many new variables that can change how Miles himself reacts to being a superhero! However, the decision for a multicultural Spiderman was not just for publicity, it was something very personal for the team of Ultimate Spiderman. Bendis stated in a separate article, “It’s certainly long overdue, even though there’s some amazing African-American and minority characters bouncing around in all the superhero universes, it’s still crazy lopsided.”

Of all the possible candidates to take over for Spiderman, I have to admit I was not expecting a brand new character. With so many obvious potentials, I’m glad Bendis decided to bring in new blood, however what this means for the current cast of Ultimate Spiderman cast does worry me. Whether or not Gwen Stacey, Mary Jane, Aunt May, and several of Peter’s other comrades will still be present is up in the air. Hopefully they’ll still be spotted through Utlimate Spiderman’s new run that starts this September.
