With Halloween around the corner, we dove into our closets and skimmed the surface of the internet to find quick and easy costumes to please all manner of costume and cosplay enthusiasts! Our focus today is on Ariel from The Little Mermaid! In her human form, obviously. Unless you want to freeze your seashells off, which is totally your business.
Skirt | Top | Shoes | Corset | Wig | Lipstick | Bow
Sure, you could head over to Hot Topic and get their short and screen printed version. But we’re going for authentic and affordability over here!
When you break it down, there are four key elements to Ariel’s human look, and they’re not as hard to find as you may think. A quick trip to Amazon will yield you a blue chiffon maxi skirt and flowy bohemian top. If you’re really a stickler for screen accuracy, you could always dye the top a powdery blue with a quick trip to the fabric store. Otherwise, just pair those two items with a basic black overbust corset from the Halloween store or the internet and you’re almost done! Once those items are out of the way, now is the time to search through your closet. If you don’t own basic flats or the ribbon to make a hairbow, toss them in your cart for a few extra dollars.
Keep the makeup neutral with some bold elements, like a bright red lip and big false lashes to play up Ariel’s wide-eyed innocence. We like Bite Lipsticks, but really, any red will do so long as it doesn’t clash.
Grab a long red wig with a heavy bang as your last Amazon purchase, brush out the curls to get a little beach wave going, and hairspray the bangs as high as you dare. Just a little twirl here and a yank there and voila! You’ve got an aesthetically pleasing configuration of hair that humans go nuts over.
Take costume to the next level by grabbing a fork from the kitchen and running it through your wig or convincing another person to tag along as your Eric! At this rate, you’ll be kissed by sunset for sure.

With Halloween around the corner, we dove into our closets and skimmed the surface of the internet to find quick and easy costumes to please all manner of costume and cosplay enthusiasts! Since we don’t want to be fashion victims or ensemble-y challenged this Halloween, our focus today is on the reigning queen of Beverly Hills in the 90s, Cher Horowitz from Clueless!
You don’t even need Cher’s Virtual Closet to put this look together.
Skirt | Cardigan | Shoes | Brows | Wig | Pen
We know, we know. Halloween stores came out with their own take on Cher Horowitz, called “Adult Fancy Girl School Girl Costume.” Vague, right? While the price tag is palatable at 44.99, the costume itself is a full-on Monet. It’s like a painting, see? From far away, it’s okay. But up close, it’s a big old mess.
See what I did there?
Assembling something similar that looks better for a comparable price is the name of the game, so let’s start with staples that can be found in the back of your closet. Fish out a basic white top and black shoes of your choice, and you’re halfway there already! Wasn’t that easy? Set those aside for now, because the items that will make you identifiable as Cher are a bit more obscure and will require a wait on shipping, because to the internet we head! Luckily, we don’t have to delve very far, as most items can be purchased from Amazon, starting with a yellow plaid skirt. There are also certain similar yellow plaid items due to the resurgence of 90s style to be found at Target.
We couldn’t pass up another Amazon find, patent chunky heels with a clear strap that look like they were pulled straight from the pages of DELIA*S. A basic yellow cardigan and over-the-knee white socks complete the attire portion, so it’s time to assemble your items and move on to the more superficial segment.
Makeup wise, Alicia Silverstone’s eyebrows stole the show as a dark contrast to her bleached blonde hair. Any eyebrow pencil or pomeade will do, however we have tested varying products at different price points, with our favorites being Anastasia’s Brow Wiz (21.00, Ulta), NYX Micro Brow Pencil (10.00, NYX Cosmetics), and the Salon Perfect Brow Marker (4.88, Walmart). Pair the strong brow with a dusting of light pink blush, a swipe of mascara, and a mauve-y lip and you’re only missing the iconic hair, so back to Amazon we go for a light blonde wig in a straight, middle parted style.
Besides her bubbly demeanor, the key to portraying Cher Horowitz is leaning into the quintessential slang of the 90s. Adopting terms like “As if,” “Totally buggin’,” and “Whatever,” will take this costume to Clueless, so long as you make a W shape with your fingers when you say it. Throw in the brick cell phones reserved for only the cool kids and a pom pen and you’re ready to roll with the homies. No? Okay, I’m done here.

Our focus today is on the determined Connie Maheswaran from Steven Universe!
Skirt | Top | Shoes | Bow
The strawberry to Steven Universe’s biscuit, Connie Maheswaran’s upbringing leads her to don a more comfortable attire. To snag Connie’s style, there are a few options to be found for a mint a-line skirt, but we chose Zappos as the closest, as it seems like a place Mrs. Maheswaran would allow her daughter to shop. If a plain white tee is somehow missing from your closet, no worries, Forever 21 has them on the cheap along with all sorts of fun socks to choose from. Ever the practical gal, head to Target to snatch up galoshes to keep your feet dry no matter what Beach City throws your way.
Have perfect vision and no use for prescriptions or readers? That’s okay, Connie does too. While you’re at Target, grab some sunglasses with round frames and pop the lenses out. Voila!
Want to take your Connie Maheswaran costume to the next level? Grab a toy violin, make Connie’s favorite book, The Unfamiliar Familiar, or have a friend join you as Steven Universe, jam buds style!

Our focus today is on that gloriously upbeat, magical boy – Steven Universe. Let’s protect humanity from magic, and monsters, and stuff!
Shirt | Pants | Flip-flops | Ukulele
Steven Universe is the perfect mashup of comfortable and magical. We tried to stick to as few stores as possible for Steven Universe, since Beach City probably doesn’t have a ton of shops to choose from on their strip.
Steven’s star tee can be purchased via the Official Cartoon Network shop, or you can go the straight DIY route and put a star applique on a red tee. Craft stores like Hobby Lobby and Michael’s have piles of basic t-shirts and felt squares to chose from, and don’t forget to pick up a fake gem while you’re at it! Our choice for cheap slim jeans in a medium wash is Old Navy, where you can also find Steven’s signature flip flops for under 25$. You’ll even have enough left over for some fry bits!
Taking this costume to the next level? Throw on a cheeseburger backpack with a pocket for every condiment and grab a toy ukulele from a Halloween shop. Or go the extra mile with the real deal and serenade all of Beach City with some sick jams! Not wanting to play solo? Convince a friend to come with you as Connie Maheswaran, jam buds style!

Halloween is steadily approaching and despite hitting several parties this past weekend, the little zombies are still coming Wednesday for their loot.
How do you make it look like you aren’t that creepy reclusive candy-hoarding curmudgeon? Lil’ geeky Jack-O-Lanterns!
Here’s a quick no-carve pumpkin display that give you instant Halloween spirit that looks like you put much research and thought in it. You don’t have to tell people I did it for you.
Step One
Grab a bag a mini-pumpkin (real or fake) and a black Sharpie marker or acrylic paint if you are particularly good with a brush, and find some fictional geek alphabets online, like Klingon, Aurebesh, Kryptonian, etc.
Step Two
Using the language of your choice, or choosing one from the little suggestion chart I put together, write or paint the word “BOO” on each one. Make several different ones if you have time.
Step Three
Line them up on a windowsill, pile them creatively on a shelf or doorstep, or display them through the house where everyone can see them. Then enjoy the conversations that arise from those who either A) get the message and think you are the coolest person ever, or B) don’t get in and think you are the weirdest person ever. Either way — it’s a win!
If you’re really inspired, these also look great carved into full-sized pumpkins for those rare non-procrastinating types.I hope you liked these small tips this Halloween season, I’m planning a couple when Christmas and the holiday season rolls around. Be watching, and be careful with those little geeklings this Halloween.
