With Halloween around the corner, we dove into our closets and skimmed the surface of the internet to find quick and easy costumes to please all manner of costume and cosplay enthusiasts! Since we don’t want to be fashion victims or ensemble-y challenged this Halloween, our focus today is on the reigning queen of Beverly Hills in the 90s, Cher Horowitz from Clueless!
You don’t even need Cher’s Virtual Closet to put this look together.
Skirt | Cardigan | Shoes | Brows | Wig | Pen
We know, we know. Halloween stores came out with their own take on Cher Horowitz, called “Adult Fancy Girl School Girl Costume.” Vague, right? While the price tag is palatable at 44.99, the costume itself is a full-on Monet. It’s like a painting, see? From far away, it’s okay. But up close, it’s a big old mess.
See what I did there?
Assembling something similar that looks better for a comparable price is the name of the game, so let’s start with staples that can be found in the back of your closet. Fish out a basic white top and black shoes of your choice, and you’re halfway there already! Wasn’t that easy? Set those aside for now, because the items that will make you identifiable as Cher are a bit more obscure and will require a wait on shipping, because to the internet we head! Luckily, we don’t have to delve very far, as most items can be purchased from Amazon, starting with a yellow plaid skirt. There are also certain similar yellow plaid items due to the resurgence of 90s style to be found at Target.
We couldn’t pass up another Amazon find, patent chunky heels with a clear strap that look like they were pulled straight from the pages of DELIA*S. A basic yellow cardigan and over-the-knee white socks complete the attire portion, so it’s time to assemble your items and move on to the more superficial segment.
Makeup wise, Alicia Silverstone’s eyebrows stole the show as a dark contrast to her bleached blonde hair. Any eyebrow pencil or pomeade will do, however we have tested varying products at different price points, with our favorites being Anastasia’s Brow Wiz (21.00, Ulta), NYX Micro Brow Pencil (10.00, NYX Cosmetics), and the Salon Perfect Brow Marker (4.88, Walmart). Pair the strong brow with a dusting of light pink blush, a swipe of mascara, and a mauve-y lip and you’re only missing the iconic hair, so back to Amazon we go for a light blonde wig in a straight, middle parted style.
Besides her bubbly demeanor, the key to portraying Cher Horowitz is leaning into the quintessential slang of the 90s. Adopting terms like “As if,” “Totally buggin’,” and “Whatever,” will take this costume to Clueless, so long as you make a W shape with your fingers when you say it. Throw in the brick cell phones reserved for only the cool kids and a pom pen and you’re ready to roll with the homies. No? Okay, I’m done here.

Our focus today is on the sun goddess, Amaterasu, from The Wicked + The Divine.
Dress | Necklace | Bracelet | Wig | Shoes | Eyes | Lips
Like a pop idol version of the Childlike Empress, the modern day version of the sun goddess Amaterasu from The Wicked + The Divine seems to be all about the bohemian life. But a famous goddess always has expensive tastes, so the theme of this DIY costume is finding the balance.
We took some liberties with Amaterasu’s getup and found a long sleeved lace dress with just enough detail to look both easy and expensive at the same time. If you’re not used to accessories, for this Amaterasu Halloween costume, go gaudy. We chose a large gold statement necklace and paired it with a faux pearl hand chain. For the shoes, our minds wandered from festival staples like gladiator shoes and fringe booties before settling on another great compromise, suede heels with rhinestones for a psuedo expensive touch. Add a curly red wig with heavy bangs from your favorite wig shop, top it with a gold filigree headband, and you have completed your outfit!
The main staple of this costume is the multicolored eye makeup, so we chose Kat Von D’s Mi Vida Loca eyeshadow palette, which has a color wheel to help you achieve this look. Now that your eyes are on point, dab on some Obsessive Compulsive Lip Tar in the shade Radiate and go do just that!
Want to take your Amaterasu Halloween costume to the next level? Add a toy microphone and black out contact lenses for the full effect of a rock goddess!
