X-Men: Destiny
Publisher: Silicon Knights & Activision
Platform: Xbox360
Hours: 16
I’m unsure if this has ever come up in a random post here on IHOGeek but I play retarded amounts of video games. I play video games when I can’t sleep, when I’m sad, and when I’m just really in the mood to play blitzball. With this in mind, I also love the X-Men. Numerous hours were put into X-Men Legends (1 and 2) and when I heard about this new game coming out, I pre-ordered it. I also realize this game came out months ago but because it sucked so hard, it took forever for me to write this :)
I was super pumped to unwrap this game, cause c’mon, it’s fuckin’ X-Men, and as I eagerly popped that sucker into my XBox360, I waited breathlessly for what I hoped to be a cutting edge intro. Not so much. Aside from a brief speech from a politician informing me of Xavier’s recent death, I’m taken to a screen where I can scroll through playable characters. All whopping three of them. I chose the little asian girl (Aimi) who looked more like Raziel from Legacy of Kain than anything and worked my way through the short tutorial. Nothing too fancy here, your basic what buttons do what. Right away, I was underwhelmed at the graphics of the NPCs and PCs. Don’t get me wrong the facial detail was great but their hair was pretty ridiculous. As I button mashed my way through a couple of levels, I gathered several X-Genes (basically materia you can equip for various mutant powers) and costumes. While I LOOOOOVED the costumes I could equip and wear, I was saddened that asian girl kept her scarf on throughout all the costume changes.
You also get to choose three different power trees to evolve through and I ain’t gonna lie, the very last power is badass. I thoroughly enjoyed the screams of the baddies while the orbited around me only to explode in fluorescent bubbles that I collected. I was also absolutely pleased at the amount of costumed heroes you encounter throughout the gameplay and it was fun to fight a few of them! A little past the halfway point in the game, you get to join either the X-Men or Brotherhood of the Mutants. Your choices until this decision gain you “faction” points so you’re gonna be leaning one way or the other so it should be an easy selection. Once that occurs, it’s a very linear path to the ending which sucks. I unlocked every single achievement, played all modes, collected EVERYTHING in under 20 hours.
I dub this an x-cruciating 3/10 and I’m being nice because they included Quicksilver. I’d also advise against buying this and instead borrowing it off the poor sap who DID purchase it and is now out $50.
